BENEFITS / DESCRIPTION:

The Hoof It Beginner Disc is the right starting point if you have never used a hoof trimming disc before. The cutting pattern is deliberately less aggressive than our Intermediate or Pro discs — it removes material more slowly, which is exactly what a new trimmer needs. Over-trimming is the most common beginner mistake and the easiest way to lame a cow accidentally; this disc gives you time to see what is happening and adjust.

The replaceable carbide blade insert system is the same one used on our higher-end discs. That means when you are ready to step up to the Intermediate or Pro, you keep the same general workflow — only the disc itself changes. The Beginner is not a “cheap” disc; it is a deliberately tuned starter tool. Many farmers keep it on a second grinder long after upgrading, for jobs where speed is less important than control.

This disc ships from Mount Compass on the Fleurieu Peninsula. We design the Hoof It range ourselves on a working dairy farm. The Beginner exists because we have spent enough time training new trimmers to know that giving someone an aggressive disc on day one is the fastest way to ruin their confidence — or worse, hurt a cow.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Should I really start with the Beginner Disc, or skip straight to the Intermediate?

Honestly: start with the Beginner. The few extra months you spend on the entry disc will save you from accidentally lameing a cow. Once you have done 30–50 trims and feel confident with the grinder, step up to the Intermediate. The Beginner does not become useless after that — it stays useful for delicate work.

What angle grinder should a beginner buy?

A trade-grade 100mm angle grinder with a side handle. Spend $150–250 — cheap grinders have poor spindle bearings and become a safety risk under load. Brands like Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee, and Hitachi are all good choices.

How long until I outgrow the Beginner Disc?

Most farmers trim 30–50 cows on the Beginner before feeling confident enough to upgrade. If you are trimming once a year on a small herd, you might never need to upgrade — the Beginner is perfectly capable for occasional use.

Is there a training video for using this disc?

We recommend YouTube searches for “hoof trimming Dutch method” — that is the technique most Australian farmers learn. The disc itself is simple to use; the skill is reading the claw and knowing when to stop. If you can shadow an experienced trimmer for half a day, that is worth more than any video.

Can I use the Beginner on overgrown cows?

Yes, but be patient — the lower-aggression cut means it takes longer on heavy growth. For severely overgrown cows, hoof nippers first to remove the bulk, then the Beginner Disc to finish the surface. Or upgrade to the Intermediate for that job.
