BENEFITS / DESCRIPTION:

A rubber hoof block is the standard treatment for a lame cow with a single-claw lesion. You bond the block to her healthy lateral or medial claw with two-part hoof glue; the block lifts the affected claw off the ground so it can heal under reduced weight-bearing pressure. Most lameness conditions — sole ulcers, white line disease, abscesses, toe lesions — respond well to 4–6 weeks of blocking. This is the medium size at 110×52×21mm, which fits most adult dairy cows.

Rubber blocks are softer than wooden blocks, which has trade-offs both ways. Pro: less impact transmission to the bonded healthy claw, lower risk of secondary lameness in the foot you are blocking onto. Con: rubber wears faster than wood on hard surfaces like concrete and rotary platforms, so the block may need replacing once during a longer recovery. For most dairy operations the comfort benefit outweighs the durability cost.

These rubber blocks ship from Mount Compass on the Fleurieu Peninsula. They work with any standard two-part hoof block adhesive — including our own Hoof Rep glue. For larger herds or contractors, we also stock rubber blocks in pack-of-20, pack-of-50, and pack-of-100 sizes (better $/block).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Why rubber blocks instead of wooden blocks?

Two reasons: rubber transmits less impact to the bonded healthy claw (lower risk of secondary lameness), and rubber blocks are slightly easier to apply because of their flex. Wooden blocks last longer on concrete and are cheaper per unit. Most farms use both — rubber for severe lameness and sensitive cows, wood for routine cases.

How long should a rubber block stay on?

The standard treatment window is 4–6 weeks — long enough for most sole ulcers, abscesses, and white line lesions to heal under reduced weight-bearing. After 6 weeks, the block usually starts to fall off naturally as the claw grows out underneath it. If it falls off early, the gluing surface was probably not dry or flat enough.

Can I reuse a rubber block?

No — once removed, the bonded surface is contaminated with old glue and dirt and will not bond cleanly again. Each block is single-use. Buy in pack-of-20 or pack-of-50 sizes for better unit economics.

What size cow does this fit?

The medium size (110×52×21mm) suits adult Holstein-Friesian and Jersey cows. For very small cows or heifers, a smaller size may be a better fit — message us if you need advice. For very large cows or bulls, consider the XL polyurethane block.

How do I know if my cow needs a rubber block or a wooden block?

For severe lameness, chronic cases, or sensitive cows, go rubber. For routine sole ulcers and white line disease on a healthy adult cow, either works. If in doubt, rubber is the safer choice — it is gentler on the foot you are blocking onto.
