Description

A pocket diamond hoof knife sharpener that goes where the work is. Where a flat file lives in your tool roll on the trimming crush, this one lives in your shirt pocket — clipped on like a pen, ready to touch up an edge between cows without breaking the rhythm of a trimming round. The tapered rod is the key feature: it slips inside the curve of a loop knife, which a flat diamond file simply can’t reach. For single-edge and double-edge knives it works the same as a stone, only faster and without the mess.

Diamond is the right abrasive for hardened hoof knife steel. It cuts dry, stays flat, and doesn’t glaze the way oilstones do. Two or three passes per side and a rolled edge is back to clean. The carbon steel rod is diamond-coated along its full length, with the taper letting you choose how aggressive each pass is — work nearer the tip for finer touch-ups, nearer the base for restoring a properly blunt blade. Pair it with the flat double-sided 400/600 grit file for shed-based sharpening, and use this one in the yard.

Hoofit ships from Mount Compass on the Fleurieu Peninsula. We’re a dairy farming family — we know what gets carried in a chest pocket and what gets left behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from your flat double-sided sharpener?

Two different jobs. The flat 400/600 grit file is for shed-based sharpening — bigger working surface, two grits, works on flat blades. This pen-style rod is for the yard — pocket-sized, single grit, and the tapered round profile reaches into loop knife curves where a flat file can’t go. Most professional trimmers carry both.

Will it sharpen the inside curve of a loop hoof knife?

Yes — that’s exactly what the tapered rod is for. Run the rod along the inside of the loop, matching the angle of the existing bevel, and work from the base of the taper toward the tip. A flat file can’t reach the inner curve, which is why most trimmers end up wanting both styles of sharpener.

How often should I use it during a trimming round?

Every five to ten cows for a quick touch-up keeps the edge cutting cleanly all session. A blade that’s worked little-and-often outlasts one that’s only sharpened when it stops cutting, and it cuts safer too. Two or three passes per side is enough for a maintenance touch-up.

Do I need oil or water?

No. Diamond rods cut dry. Wipe the rod clean with a rag after use and screw the cap back on. The cap stops swarf and grit getting onto the diamond surface in your pocket.
